Re-stocking An M-1A Rifle

The M-14 has seen 54 years service with the US military and will probably be around for another decade. The US Army had to re-learn the importance of having a hard-hitting, long ranged cartridge in a semiauto format and adopted the US Navy SEALs Mk 14 Mod 0 Enhanced Battle Rifle at squad level in Afghanistan. The US Marine Corps had reintroduced the M14 as its Designated Marksman Rifle and recently moved to something very like the EBR in the form of its M39 Enhanced Marksman Rifle, although it has since moved to replace these with Army M110s. Part of the reason the M-14 is proving so long lasting in service is the huge civilian M-1A rifle market which has enabled manufacturers to produce a plethora of accessories to keep the rifle up to date, in some cases revolutionizing its performance in the process.

M-14 stocks have come a long way since the 1950s walnut or birch issue unit. The M-14 started out with a very clean, almost sporting stock which looked pretty but wasn’t very practical. Some T-44 prototypes had straight line stocks and pistol grips, but traditionalism was a force to be reckoned with in the Pentomic Army and it ended up stocked like a sporterized Garand. The rifle had the facility to take a grenade launcher sight on the left side of its reciever, but optical sights, if considered, never made it onto the final product. Scope base mounting is such an issue that it is not unknown for target shooters to spot weld bases to the receiver. With the original stock muzzle climb is a significant issue even with rapid semiautomatic fire – full auto is not practical and many service rifles had their selectors removed.

Troy identified this problem and addressed it by putting the line of the stock slightly above the axis of the bore. This configuration totally revolutionizes the recoil characteristics of the rifle making very fast follow-up shots or auto fire eminiently practical. The Troy MCS is built to take any AR-15 stock or pistol grip and can be adapted to take folding stocks which are not possible with the AR-15. Troy also cracked the optics mounting problem. Like other replacement M-14 stock manufacturers they went for a quad Picatinny rail set-up for maximum versatility. However, the higher butt line of the Troy MCS meant they could use a single length of rail stretching all the way back to the back of the receiver at the same height. This makes co-witnessing iron sights like the Troy battle sights and Magpul Gen 2 MBUS easy as is aligning magnifiers and NV units. The Troy MCS is milled from two pieces of 6000 series Aluminium and takes about 20 minutes to fit with normal hand tools. There is no difference in weight between an MCS equipped M14 with a common collapsible butt and pistol grip and a traditionally stocked M14 fitted with a side attached mounting base. Any barrel length or contour can be accommodated by the MCS. Glass bedding and the annoying need to rebuild every 1000 rounds or so is thus avoided.
