Lens Type

Standard lenses either for general use, reading or even just plain (no prescription) if the glasses are to be worn for fashion purposes.
Bi focal lenses which are clearly divided into sections for reading and general use.
Progressive Lenses that like bi focals allow reading and general use but the prescription changes gradually. Most people prefer progressive lenses over bi-focals not least because they look better but they do make your discount eyeglasses more expensive.

Lens Thickness

Glass lenses are a thing of the past, today’s lenses are made of plastics that weigh less and do not break easily.

High index lenses are designed to accommodate strong prescriptions avoiding the old thick lenses but they do cost more.

Lens Coatings

Anti-reflective coating – reduces reflections such as halos around lights and makes night driving easier. It also means that other people will not see any reflection off your glasses and will see your eyes normally.
Anti-scratch coating – which should make the lenses last longer by reducing scratching but it does not make scratching impossible. Some of the more expensive types of lenses do not need this coating.
UV coating – normal plastic lenses block much UV light but this coating will give 100% protection. Worth having it you will be wearing your glasses outside (without sunglasses). However, many types of lenses protect you from UV without any additional coating.

Lens Tints
If you are ordering prescription sunglasses you will need to select the tint color. The default will probably be gray but you can select your personal preference.

Photochromic (often called Transition) Lenses Photochromic lenses are almost clear indoors but darken automatically outdoors where they provide full UV protection. As such they are very convenient and avoid the need for prescription sunglasses in most conditions. The exception is that they probably won’t work in a car.
